5.3. Firmware Flashing (Most powerful but risky)

General steps:

  1. Download correct generic firmware (see Section 7).
  2. Connect PC to MF253S via Ethernet (static IP: 192.168.0.100).
  3. Launch ZTE flashing tool (e.g., ZTE_Upgrade_Tool.exe).

  5. Start flash – do NOT power off.
  6. Wait 5–10 minutes for reboot.
  7. After reboot, reset to factory defaults.

Insert SIM from different carrier. If it registers, unlock successful. Download correct generic firmware (see Section 7)

Method 3: Editing the Configuration File (Advanced)

For advanced users, unlocking can be achieved by editing the cq_config.xml or similar configuration files located in the /usr/zte_web/ directory.

  1. Use a tool like QCOM or EFS Explorer to read the EFS (Encryptable File System) partition.
  2. Locate the configuration file defining the network list.
  3. The file often contains a list of allowed PLMNs. By deleting the specific restrictions (or setting the list to allow "All"), the device becomes unlocked.
  4. Write the modified file back to the router and reboot.
