Total: War Attila English Language Files Codex Install
Lost in Translation: Unpacking the English Language Files in Total War: Attila’s CODEX Release
There’s a peculiar ritual in PC gaming preservation: the moment you install a scene release like Total War: Attila from CODEX, you’re greeted not by the roar of battle, but by a silent, language-selection screen. And for English speakers, the journey often involves a separate download: the English language files.
Why? And what’s really happening under the hood when you manually patch a language into a cracked build of Creative Assembly’s bleakest strategy epic?
Step 1: Verify What You Currently Have
Before making changes, navigate to your Total War: Attila installation folder. The default path for CODEX releases is usually:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Total War Attila\ total war attila english language files codex install
Or wherever you extracted the ISO and ran the setup.exe.
Inside the main folder, look for the following subdirectories:
data/– Contains.packfiles (the core game data).launcher/– Contains launcher configuration._CommonRedist/– Contains DirectX and VC++ redistributables.
Now, check the data folder for language-specific .pack files. You are looking for files named: Lost in Translation: Unpacking the English Language Files
local_en.pack(English)local_ru.pack(Russian)local_ge.pack(German)local_fr.pack(French)local_sp.pack(Spanish)local_it.pack(Italian)
If you see local_ru.pack but NOT local_en.pack, your CODEX release is missing the English files entirely. In this case, you will need to download the English language pack separately (covered in Step 3).
If you see both, the files are present, but the game is configured incorrectly.
What If The Audio Is Still Wrong? (Installing English Voice Files)
If the text is English but the soldiers are speaking Russian or German, you need to install the actual English audio pack. data/ – Contains
- Check your download: Did you download a "Multilanguage" repack? If yes, the English files are likely in a separate folder named
_EnglishorOptionalinside the ISO or installer. - Manual Copy: If you have access to the original Codex ISO:
- Mount the ISO.
- Look for a folder called
CODEXorEnglish Voices. - Inside, you will find a
datafolder. - Copy the
.packfiles from that folder (specificallysound_english.packor similar) into your game'sdatafolder, overwriting if asked.
- Downloading external files: If you do not have the files, you will need to search for "Total War Attila English language pack" from a trusted game archive site (ensure you have antivirus active). Look for a file named
local_en.packandsound_english.pack. Place these in thedatafolder.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Before downloading any external "language pack," try this method first. Most of the time, you already have the files.
Option C: Repack-Specific Fixes (FitGirl, DODI, Xatab)
Many repacks include selective download options. If you used a repack:
- FitGirl Repack: Re-run the installer and check "English Voiceovers" and "English Text" under components.
- DODI Repack: Look for a
RedistorLanguage Packfolder inside the game directory – there is often aSetup_English.batfile waiting to be run. - Xatab Repack: Usually includes all languages, but you must change
steam_emu.iniand deletedata/local_ru.packto force English.
“I have no _en files and cannot find a download anywhere.”
- Final Resort: Download a different repack of Total War: Attila. Repackers like FitGirl, DODI, or Xatab usually include an option to select English during installation. Install that version, then copy its
data\local_en.packanddata\audio_en.packinto your existing CODEX installation.
