Da biste razumeli zašto je ovaj film toliko tražen, morate poznavati legendu. Sveta Petka (Paraskeva) živela je u 11. veku u oblasti Trakije i Vizantije. Odrekla se bogatstva i svetovnog života, povukavši se u pustinju (otuda "Krst u pustinji").

Prema predanju, Petka je učinila čudo: ukrstila je tri grane (ili tri palmina lista) i zasadila ih u suvu pustinju, a one su zazelenile. Ovo čudo predstavlja trijumf vere nad prirodom i simbol je podvižništva. Film se upravo fokusira na ovaj momenat, ali i na njene borbe sa iskušenjima, sušom i usamljenošću.
