Title: Finally Accessible – A Review of the Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes English Patch
The Verdict: 4.5/5 Stars
For years, the Sengoku Basara franchise has held a unique, almost cult-like status outside of Japan. Known for its "history on steroids" approach, hyper-masculine archetypes, and stylish gameplay, the series unfortunately remained largely locked behind a language barrier. While the main console titles received English localizations (mostly), the portable spin-offs were left by the wayside. Sengoku Basara Battle Heroes English Patch
The Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes English Patch is a labor of love that finally unlocks one of the most unique entries in the series for Western audiences, turning an import-only curiosity into a fully playable gem. Title: Finally Accessible – A Review of the
Why an English Patch is Necessary
Capcom never localized Battle Heroes. The official reasons likely revolved around the PSP's declining Western market and the niche appeal of a smaller-scale, duel-based musou game. Consequently, English-speaking players were stuck with a Japanese menu system, incomprehensible story skits, and ability descriptions that might as well have been ancient runes. The Story: The script is full of over-the-top
The Japanese version is playable if you memorize menus, but you lose:
- The Story: The script is full of over-the-top melodrama and comedy. Without translation, it's just a series of grunts and victory poses.
- Equipment & Skills: Dozens of items modify your attacks. Guessing what does what is a recipe for frustration.
- Mission Objectives: Many battles have secret conditions to unlock characters. Missing these means endless grinding.
Enter the fans.
The Good
- Combat Depth: Unlike later Basara games, Battle Heroes requires genuine strategy. Managing two characters, swapping to build meter, and timing tag-team supers is thrilling.
- Local Multiplayer: The patch unlocks the Ad-Hoc multiplayer. Four players (two teams of two) battling in chaotic samurai brawls is a blast on real hardware or PPSSPP's online simulation.
- Unlockable Obsession: There are over 30 characters, from the iconic (Masamune, Yukimura) to the bizarre (the dancing ninja, Sasuke). The patch clarifies how to unlock them all.
Compatibility
- ✅ PPSSPP (Windows, Android, iOS, Linux) – Fully playable.
- ✅ PSP (CFW 6.60+ PRO / LME) – Works perfectly.
- ✅ PS Vita (Adrenaline) – No issues reported.
- ⚠️ PS3 (PSP Remaster Launcher) – Not tested, but may work.
The Bad
- Repetitive: The game reuses a handful of arenas. After 10 hours, you'll feel the budget constraints.
- Incomplete Translation: Some post-battle quotes and the in-game codex (datebook) remain partially untranslated in some patch versions. Check the patch notes for the latest version's coverage.
The Neutral
- No Open Fields: If you expect Dynasty Warriors-style map control, you will be disappointed. This is purely an arena fighter. Missions involve "capture points" (stand in a circle) or "escort" tasks, not large-scale warfare.
- Graphics: It's a 2009 PSP game. Character models are chunky, draw distance is low. PPSSPP can upscale this beautifully, but on original hardware, it's rough.
