Step 2: USB Preparation

  1. Format the USB stick to FAT32.
  2. Copy the update file to the root directory of the USB drive. Do not place it in a folder.
  3. Note: Some updates require renaming the file to specific names like update.zip or McuUpdate.bin as dictated by the instruction manual.

4. Add New Features

Recent updates include:

  • Split-screen mode (CarPlay + car’s native rear-view camera)
  • Steering wheel track skip customization
  • Boot animation changes
  • Support for iOS 18’s new CarPlay dashboard

1. Fix Annoying Bugs

Older firmware versions (pre-2023) are known for:

  • Intermittent black screens when reversing
  • Audio lag (delay in calls or video playback)
  • Bluetooth pairing drops
  • Microphone echo on BMW iDrive systems

Problem 2: Update Stuck at 0%, 50%, or 99%

  • Fix: This usually indicates a corrupt file or incompatible firmware. Power cycle the car (turn off and wait 2 minutes). Re-download the file from your seller. If it fails again, you may need to perform a "force update" by renaming the file to force_update.img (specific to some Roadtop models).

What the Update Improved (⭐⭐⭐⭐☆)

After updating to the December 2024 / January 2025 build (the “stability fix” release), I noticed:

  1. Boot Speed: Cold start dropped from ~18 seconds to ~12 seconds. Still not instant, but noticeably better.
  2. Audio Sync: The old 0.5-second Bluetooth audio lag on phone calls is almost gone. Still there for YouTube, but calls are usable now.
  3. Auto-Brightness: Previously useless (too dark at night). Now it actually dims to a readable level. Not perfect, but safe.
  4. iPhone Connection: Wireless dropouts reduced from 2-3 per hour to maybe 1 per 2-hour drive.

Should You Update?

| You should update if... | Skip the update if... | |------------------------------|----------------------------| | Your audio drops out constantly | Your unit works fine right now | | You hate the night brightness | You don’t own a USB-C drive | | Carplay disconnects on bumps | You use wired Carplay only (update changes little) |

Method 1: Over-the-Air (Wi-Fi) Update (Easiest)

Note: This only works if your dongle is already connected to your car's screen. Redesigned Interface : Our updated CarPlay interface boasts

  1. Connect to the Dongle: Go to your iPhone’s Wi-Fi settings. Look for a network named SmartBox-XXXX or RoadTop-XXXX. Connect to it (password is usually 12345678 or 88888888).
  2. Open a Browser: On your iPhone, open Safari and type: 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1 (check your manual, but 192.168.2.1 is most common).
  3. Check for Update: You will see a web dashboard. Click "Firmware Upgrade" > "Check for Update."
  4. Install: If an update is available, click "Download & Install." Do not turn off your car or close the browser for 5 minutes. The dongle will reboot automatically.
