Californication Demos (1998-1999)

Before the formal sessions, Frusciante and Flea demoed over 30 songs at Flea’s garage. Known as the “Garage Tapes”, they include:

  • "Plate of Brown" – A hilarious, absurdist punk song about eating rotten food. Only 50 seconds long.
  • "Oboe" – A slow, mournful instrumental with Frusciante playing a synth-oboe patch. It later evolved into "This Velvet Glove."
  • "The Belly of the Whale" – A funky, syncopated riff that never progressed beyond a 4-minute loop. Kiedis had no lyrics.

The Californication sessions proper at Cello Studios produced at least 10 fully mixed, unreleased songs. The most famous: "Fat Dance" (eventually a B-side), "How Strong" (a B-side), and "Bunker Hill" (a B-side). But the true lost gem is "Chlorine Dream" — a dreamy, slow-burn track with harmonies reminiscent of The Beach Boys. Kiedis sings about swimming in a chemical pool. It was left off because it “didn’t fit the energy.”

I’m With You / I’m Beside You – Officially Released B-Sides (2011-2013)

This era is unique: 17 songs were recorded, 14 on IWY, and the other 9 released as I’m Beside You (vinyl B-sides).
So no unreleased material from this era – all circulating songs are official.

But one truly unreleased track exists:

  • "How It Grows" – mentioned by Klinghoffer. Never surfaced. Acoustic demo only.

4. The One Hot Minute Abandoned Album (1994-95)

This is the most dramatic story. Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) joined, but the chemistry was volatile. They recorded two full albums worth of material. The official album is dark, but the unreleased stuff is darker.

  • “Stretch” (You Out) – A 7-minute epic that did leak. It’s better than half the actual album: a sludgy, psychedelic groove about heroin withdrawal. (Listen for the line: “My name is I-just-don’t-care”).
  • “Blender” – A funk-metal mess that the band hated. Navarro loved it. Arguments over this track broke up a recording session.
  • “The Heartfelt and the Insincere” – A slow, acoustic ballad with Anthony trying to sing seriously. It’s uncomfortable but beautiful.
    After the tour, the band scrapped 18 songs. Navarro claims he has DAT tapes, but Anthony burned his copies in 1996.
