Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a Looper living in Kansas. He is efficient, disciplined, and saves his silver bars in hopes of eventually retiring to France. The catch in his profession is "closing the loop": eventually, the mob sends the Looper's future self back to be killed by their younger self. This final kill comes with a huge payday (gold bars) and signifies the end of the Looper's contract.
