Why General English Listening Isn't Enough
Many students assume that watching Netflix or listening to music is sufficient listening TOEFL ITP practice. Unfortunately, this is a trap. The TOEFL ITP listening section tests very specific skills:
- Inference: The answer is rarely stated word-for-word. You must understand implied meaning (e.g., "If I were you, I'd take the elevator" implies the stairs are broken or too difficult).
- Idioms & Two-Word Verbs: The ITP loves phrases like "put off" (delay), "run into" (meet by chance), or "call off" (cancel).
- Negatives with Comparatives: "No one is more diligent than Maria" means Maria is the most diligent.
- Focus on the second line: In Part A, the critical information is almost always in the second speaker's response.
