Lažanje na zvezde: Understanding the Concept and Its English Translation
Lažanje na zvezde, a phrase that has been gaining popularity in recent years, especially among those interested in spirituality, astrology, and personal growth. But what does it really mean? And how can we translate it into English? In this article, we'll explore the concept of lažanje na zvezde, its origins, and its English translation.
What is Lažanje na Zvezde?
Lažanje na zvezde is a phrase that originates from the Serbian language, where "lažanje" means "lying" or "resting," and "na zvezde" means "on the stars." When combined, the phrase roughly translates to "lying on the stars" or "resting on the stars." However, the meaning goes beyond its literal translation.
In essence, lažanje na zvezde refers to a state of being where one feels a deep connection to the universe, the stars, and the cosmos. It's a feeling of oneness with the vastness of space, where one's worries, fears, and doubts seem to fade away. Imagine lying on a clear, starry night, gazing up at the celestial bodies above, and feeling a sense of peace, tranquility, and unity with the universe. That's what lažanje na zvezde is all about.
The Concept of Lažanje na Zvezde
Lažanje na zvezde is often associated with the idea of escapism, where individuals seek to escape the stresses and challenges of everyday life. However, it's not just about running away from problems; it's about finding a deeper connection to something greater than ourselves. It's about recognizing that we're part of a larger universe, with its own rhythms, patterns, and mysteries.
In a way, lažanje na zvezde can be seen as a form of meditation, where one becomes fully present in the moment, letting go of worries about the past or future. It's a way to quiet the mind, calm the emotions, and tune into the vibrations of the universe.

So, how can we translate lažanje na zvezde into English? While there's no direct equivalent, some possible translations include:
- "Lying on the stars"
- "Resting on the stars"
- "Stargazing meditation"
- "Cosmic contemplation"
- "Starlight reverie"
In English, we have various concepts that relate to lažanje na zvezde, such as:
- Stargazing: the act of gazing at the stars, often for pleasure or to contemplate life.
- Astro-meditation: a form of meditation that involves gazing at the stars or contemplating the universe.
- Cosmic connection: a sense of oneness with the universe, often experienced through stargazing or meditation.
The Benefits of Lažanje na Zvezde
Lažanje na zvezde offers numerous benefits, including:
- Reduced stress and anxiety: by letting go of worries and connecting to the vastness of space.

While its English translation may not fully capture its essence, the idea remains the same: to find peace, tranquility, and oneness with the cosmos. Whether you're interested in spirituality, astrology, or simply looking for a way to relax, lažanje na zvezde is definitely worth exploring. So, next time you find yourself under a starry night sky, take a moment to lie down, gaze up at the stars, and experience the magic of lažanje na zvezde for yourself.
4. Comparison with English Idioms
| English Idiom | Similarity | Difference | |---------------|------------|------------| | Barking up the wrong tree | Involves barking, implies error | Wrong tree implies a correct target exists; stars have no target | | Shouting into the void | Futility, no response | Void is empty; stars are distant but visible | | Howling at the moon | Celestial, futile, emotional | Howling implies loneliness; barking implies anger |
Thus, lajanje na zvezde uniquely combines anger, futility, and cosmic indifference.
The Story Behind the Song
Written by the band’s frontman, Bora Đorđević, "Lajanje na zvezde" captures the spirit of a generation trapped in a decaying system. The title itself is a brilliant oxymoron. Dogs bark at the moon, but here, the object is stars—distant, unreachable, and indifferent. The song speaks to anyone who has ever shouted into the void, knowing full well that no one is listening.
The protagonist is not a hero. He is an ordinary man—perhaps drunk, perhaps heartbroken, certainly disillusioned—who stands in a muddy yard, barking at the stars. It is pathetic, yet strangely heroic.
Summary
"Lajanje na zvezde" is a beautiful, biting idiom. It serves as a reminder to know one's place in the universe. It suggests that there are things—beauty, genius, destiny—that should be admired in silence, because to raise one's voice against them is an act of foolishness that reveals only the smallness of the barker.
3. The Time Stamp – 3 AM
Three in the morning is the "witching hour." It is the time when insomnia meets regret. It is when you miss the people who have left—through death, betrayal, or simply time.
Lajanje na zvezde (Barking at the Stars): Vremeplov emocija i odrastanja
"The story follows Mihajlo, a young man facing life changes and the pressure of growing up. His relationship with Maja represents a pillar of joy in his life, while on the other side lies a difficult family moment – his father's illness."
Analiza likova (Character Analysis) Ono što ovu knjigu čini posebnom je autentičnost glavnog lika. Mihajlo nije savršen; on je povučen, sentimentalan i često neodlučan.
"Mihajlo is not perfect; he is withdrawn, sentimental, and often indecisive. In a world where we are expected to be strong and successful, Mihajlo represents a character many can identify with. His struggle is silent, yet intense."
"The key theme of the novel is transience. The author reminds us that life is fragile and that moments of happiness often come parallel to moments of sadness. The metaphor of 'barking at the stars' perfectly describes the human striving for the unattainable – the attempt to change destiny or stop time."
"This is not a book that offers simple solutions or a Hollywood happy ending. It is realistic, painful, yet beautiful at the same time. It is recommended for anyone seeking a deeper story about human relationships."

Here’s a short review you can use or adapt for Lajanje na zvezde (English title: Barking at the Stars) with English subtitles or translation:
A Timeless Serbian Classic – Now Accessible to a Wider Audience
Lajanje na zvezde (Barking at the Stars) is one of those rare films that perfectly balances heartbreak, humor, and harsh social reality. Set in a small, poverty-stricken Serbian town between the world wars, it tells the story of two misfits – a poor, idealistic teacher and a blind Roma violinist – who challenge the rigid, hypocritical moral codes of their community.
Even if you’re not familiar with Balkan cinema, the film’s universal themes of prejudice, loneliness, and quiet rebellion come through powerfully. The black-and-white cinematography is stunning, the acting is raw and deeply human, and the script is razor-sharp – sometimes tender, sometimes painfully funny.
Watching it with English translation (subtitles or otherwise) is a game-changer. The dialogue is rich with local slang, proverbs, and emotional nuance, and a good English version captures the rhythm of the original without losing its soul. Non-Serbian speakers can finally appreciate the biting irony and poetic melancholy that make this film a masterpiece.
Verdict: If you care about world cinema, character-driven stories, or just beautifully told tales of outsiders – don’t miss it. The English translation makes it accessible, but the film’s spirit remains 100% authentic. Highly recommended.

Lana nije dvojila.
English Translation: Lying on the Stars
In the small town of Željku, where the nights were calm and the stars shone bright, there lived a young girl named Lana. Lana was a dreamer, always looking up at the sky and the stars, which seemed to her like an un forbidden kingdom. Her greatest wish was to fly among the stars, feel their coldness, and freedom.
One night, as Lana sat on the lawn in front of her house, gazing at the stars, she heard a strange noise. Suddenly, a mysterious old man with a long white beard and a star in his eyes appeared behind her.
"Do you want to fly among the stars?" he asked her, with a mysterious smile.
Lana couldn't believe her ears. "How can I do that?" she asked, with great curiosity.
The old man handed her a small, shiny star. "This star will allow you to fly among the stars. But, you must know that you'll have to pay a price for it."
Lana didn't hesitate. She took the star and felt its coldness and power. The old man told her that she just had to close her eyes, imagine a place she wanted to fly to, and hold the star.
Lana closed her eyes, imagined herself flying among the stars, and... began to rise into the air. She felt the wind in her hair and the stars approaching her. She flew above the clouds, above the mountains and seas, until she reached the stars.
She was thrilled. She felt a freedom and happiness she had never felt before. But, as time passed, she began to realize that it wasn't just about enjoying the flight. She had to pay a price for it.
The price was loneliness. Every time she flew among the stars, she was more and more alone. Her friends and family couldn't understand her, because they thought she was a crazy girl who talked about stars.
Lana began to realize that it wasn't just about flying among the stars that mattered, but also the people who were important to her. She had to choose between her desire and her love for her loved ones.
I hope you enjoyed the story!
