Since AutoCAD 2017 is no longer sold by Autodesk, this guide focuses on installing a legitimate licensed copy (e.g., from an old purchase, student version, or company license file).
Step 3: Run the Installation

Troubleshooting (common fixes)
- Installer fails: Run as Administrator, disable antivirus, ensure .NET Framework 4.5+ installed.
- Licensing errors: Sign out/in of Autodesk Account, run the Autodesk Licensing Service as admin, or use the License Transfer/Repair utility.
- Missing components or crashes: Update graphics drivers, run AutoCAD in software (non-accelerated) mode via OPTIONS → System → Graphics Performance.
7. Uninstalling Previous Versions Cleanly
Installing AutoCAD 2017 over an older version (e.g., 2015 or 2016) is a recipe for DLL conflicts. Always uninstall first.
The Clean Sweep Method:
- Standard Uninstall: Control Panel > Uninstall "Autodesk AutoCAD 201x".
- Use the Microsoft FixIt Tool: Download the "Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter" from Microsoft.

Step 5: Configure Installation Settings
Choose Configure (recommended) instead of “Install” directly. This allows you to:
- Select installation path – Change from default
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\to another drive if needed. - Choose components – Uncheck features you don’t need, such as:
- AutoCAD Raster Design
- Material Library (if you don’t render)
- Autodesk Desktop App
- Enable or disable Autodesk Genuine Service.
Click Install after configuration.
