Since AutoCAD 2017 is no longer sold by Autodesk, this guide focuses on installing a legitimate licensed copy (e.g., from an old purchase, student version, or company license file).

Step 3: Run the Installation

1. Launch the installer

   • If using an SFX file, it will extract to C:\Autodesk\ (you can delete this folder after install).

2. Extract files – Wait for the extraction to complete (may take 5–10 minutes).

3. Click "Install" on the setup window.

4. Accept the license agreement → Click Next.

5. Enter product information

   • Serial Number: Your-Valid-Serial
   • Product Key: 001I1
   • Leave "Use network license" unchecked unless you have a license server.

6. Configure installation (optional but recommended): Install Autodesk Autocad 2017

   • Click Browse to change install path (avoid spaces in folder names).
   • Uncheck features you don’t need:
     • AutoCAD 2017 Language Pack (unless you need multiple UI languages)
     • Autodesk ReCap (if not used)
     • Autodesk Raster Design (optional)

7. Click Install → The process takes 15–30 minutes.

Troubleshooting (common fixes)

• Installer fails: Run as Administrator, disable antivirus, ensure .NET Framework 4.5+ installed.
• Licensing errors: Sign out/in of Autodesk Account, run the Autodesk Licensing Service as admin, or use the License Transfer/Repair utility.
• Missing components or crashes: Update graphics drivers, run AutoCAD in software (non-accelerated) mode via OPTIONS → System → Graphics Performance.

7. Uninstalling Previous Versions Cleanly

Installing AutoCAD 2017 over an older version (e.g., 2015 or 2016) is a recipe for DLL conflicts. Always uninstall first.

The Clean Sweep Method:

1. Standard Uninstall: Control Panel > Uninstall "Autodesk AutoCAD 201x".
2. Use the Microsoft FixIt Tool: Download the "Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter" from Microsoft.
3. Manual File Cleanup: Delete C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 201x.
4. Registry Cleanup (Advanced): Run regedit. Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\AutoCAD. Backup your registry first.

Installation steps

1. Run the AutoCAD 2017 installer as Administrator (right-click → Run as administrator).

3. Accept the license agreement and click Next.

Step 5: Configure Installation Settings

Choose Configure (recommended) instead of “Install” directly. This allows you to:

• Select installation path – Change from default C:\Program Files\Autodesk\ to another drive if needed.
• Choose components – Uncheck features you don’t need, such as:
  • AutoCAD Raster Design
  • Material Library (if you don’t render)
  • Autodesk Desktop App
• Enable or disable Autodesk Genuine Service.

Click Install after configuration.
