General Information

7. The Unwritten Rules for the Visitor

If you step into an Indian home:

  1. Shoes off at the door. The home is a sacred space; the floor is for sitting and eating.
  2. You will be force-fed. Saying "No, thank you" once is considered politeness. Saying it twice is an insult. Eat the kaju katli (cashew sweet). Worry about the calories tomorrow.
  3. The head wobble. That side-to-side head tilt isn't a "no." It is a "yes, I hear you, I acknowledge you, maybe I agree, maybe I'm just being polite." Embrace the wobble.
