The "Rother" (8653) Motherboard: A Deep Dive into HP’s Hidden Powerhouse
If you’ve ever cracked open an HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop or a high-end HP Envy model, you might have spotted a sleek, dark circuit board with the cryptic label SSID: 8653. Known among enthusiasts by its code name, "Rother," this proprietary motherboard is the heart of some of HP's most popular pre-built machines.
While OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) boards often get a bad rap for being "locked down," the Rother 8653 has a few surprises up its sleeve for those looking to squeeze every bit of performance out of their system. Under the Hood: The Specs That Matter
The Rother motherboard is built on the Intel H370 chipset and features the LGA 1151 socket, specifically designed for 8th and 9th Generation Intel Core processors. Form Factor: Customized (roughly 29.09 x 20.3 cm).
Memory: Two DDR4 UDIMM (288-pin) slots. While HP officially states it supports up to 32GB of DDR4-2666, some users and community experts from the HP Support Community suggest it can handle up to 64GB with the right modules.
Storage: Includes a standard SATA port for traditional drives and one M.2 socket 3 (Type 2280) for NVMe SSDs. Note that the M.2 slot runs at PCIe x2 speeds, which might throttle some high-end drives to half their maximum speed.
Audio & Networking: Features integrated Realtek ALC3601 5.1 channel audio and a Realtek RTL8111HSH Gigabit LAN controller. The Upgrade Path: How Far Can You Go?
One of the most common questions on forums like r/pcmasterrace is about upgrading the CPU. Because the board is rated for a TDP of up to 65W, you have some solid options:
Intel Core i7-9700/i7-9700F: The top-tier officially supported upgrade for maximum multi-core performance.
Intel Core i5-9400/i5-9400F: A great "sweet spot" for gaming without breaking the bank.
Intel Core i3-9100: A reliable budget choice for everyday productivity.
Pro Tip: Avoid "K" series processors (like the i9-9900K). While they might fit the socket, the board's basic VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) and 65W limit mean the CPU will likely downclock, resulting in wasted potential and poor performance. The Proprietary Problem
The biggest hurdle for "Rother" owners is its proprietary nature. Unlike standard ATX boards, HP uses a non-standard power connector—an 8-pin and a 4-pin setup rather than the universal 24-pin. This makes upgrading your Power Supply Unit (PSU) a challenge. If you're eyeing a beefy new GPU, you may need to source a specific HP-branded 500W PSU (like the L05757-800) or use specialized adapters.

Storage Bottleneck: Users on HP Support Forums have noted that the M.2 slot may only run at PCIe x2 speeds, effectively cutting the potential speed of modern NVMe drives in half.
Proprietary Design: It uses non-standard power connectors. If you want to replace the power supply, you'll likely need specialized adapters or a specific HP-branded PSU. 💬 Community Perspectives
“From a quick Googling, the motherboard seems to have very basic VRM. Technically you can put a 9900K in it and it will boot up, but the performance will be limited by the VRM since they cannot handle the power pushed to that CPU.” Reddit · r/pcmasterrace · 2 years ago
“The board has 3 SATA data headers (DVD and HD occupied, so a spare header is there).” HP Support Community · 5 years ago 💡 Verdict
is a reliable "workhorse" for its intended purpose—mid-range gaming and daily productivity. However, its proprietary form factor and limited BIOS options make it a poor choice for anyone interested in PC building or future-proofing. It is best treated as a fixed component of your prebuilt system rather than a foundation for a custom project.
