How to Play Call of Duty: Black Ops (Multiplayer) Offline on PC

Important note: instructions refer to features typical of the PC edition of Black Ops; availability may depend on your game version and whether you own the original or a remastered/reissued edition.

Step 3: The Critical Config File Edit (Fixes the Crash)

If you launch the game now, it will likely crash when clicking Multiplayer. To fix this, you must trick the game into thinking you already have a valid local profile.

  1. Navigate to your Call of Duty: Black Ops player folder. By default:
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty Black Ops\players
  2. Look for a file named config.cfg.
  3. Make a backup copy of this file (copy/paste it to your desktop).
  4. Open the original config.cfg with Notepad.
  5. Scroll to the bottom and add these two lines: 
    seta cl_offline_client "1"
seta party_max_players "18"

  • No zombies offline multiplayer – Zombies mode is either solo or online co-op, not offline co-op on PC.
