Measurement Installation Do's and Don'ts
- Impulse Lines (for DP transmitters): Slope them 1:12 (1 inch per foot) away from the process for liquids (to drain gas), toward the process for gas (to drain condensate).
- RTD/TC (Thermocouple) Wells: Install with thermal paste inside the well. Do not bottom out the sensor (leave 1–2mm gap at tip).
- Magnetic Flow Meters: Must be full pipe. Install on the vertical up leg, never before a pump suction.
6. Instrument selection, specification & documentation
- Create instrument datasheets including: tag, process connection, range, accuracy, materials, enclosure rating, power, signal type (4–20 mA/HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP), intrinsic safety/explosion-proof requirements, calibration intervals.
- Use standardized specifications and approved vendor lists.
- Provide loop diagrams (P&ID), IO lists, wiring diagrams, junction box and marshalling details.
4.3 The “Maintenance-Free” Installation Checklist
- [ ] All impulse lines are sloped and blown down.
- [ ] All electrical conduits are sealed against moisture ingress.
- [ ] All valve packing bolts are torqued to specification (not overtightened).
- [ ] Positioner feedback arm is in the correct geometric range (mid-stroke at 50% signal).
- [ ] Process connections are coated with anti-seize (for high temp) or PTFE tape (for low temp).
Pressure
- Technologies: piezo-resistive, strain-gauge, capacitive, differential pressure (DP), absolute.
- Use DP flow/nozzle for high differential; absolute for vacuum.
- Selection criteria: range, overpressure protection, temperature limits, media compatibility, accuracy ±% span, intrinsic safety if required.
