The standard limits heat input (typically ≤ 5.0 kJ/mm for S355G). Your WPS must qualify using CTOD tests per EN 10225 Annex A.
Offshore classification societies (DNV, ABS, Lloyd’s Register) will ask for the material certificate (EN 10204 3.2) referencing EN 10225.
Weldability is defined via:
Example for S355G10+N: CEV ≤ 0.42% for thickness < 50mm.
Step 1 – Preparation
- Clean sample (no oil, dust)
- Stabilize at 23±5°C for 2 hours
- Mark measurement grid on sheet
Step 2 – Thickness & Width
- Use calibrated micrometer (0.001 mm)
- Measure at 5 points across width, 10 points along length
Step 3 – Burr & Edge Quality
- Place sheet on granite plate
- Run dial indicator along edge at 45° angle
- Record max burr height
Step 4 – Flatness (Wave/Buckle)
- Clamp sheet at one end on flat table
- Insert feeler gauge under wave peak
- Record height & span length
Step 5 – Documentation
- Compare to specified tolerances (e.g., IEC 60404-9)
