The lights in the diner went out. The emergency exit sign flickered and died. The only light left was the pale, sickly glow of the telegram machine's screen, and the slow, relentless crawl of new words printing all by themselves.
Leo looked down at his feet. The trapdoor to the basement had a single, rusty bolt.
It was sliding open on its own.
