The Plot: Directed by Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral), Blackhat follows Nicholas Hathaway (Chris Hemsworth), a brilliant hacker serving a prison sentence. When a cyberterrorist causes a nuclear meltdown in Hong Kong and manipulates the stock market, the FBI and a Chinese government agency recruit Hathaway to track down the culprit. The hunt takes them from Chicago to Hong Kong and Jakarta.

The Good:

• Cinematography: Michael Mann brings his signature neo-noir style. The digital photography is gritty, atmospheric, and visually stunning, especially during the night scenes in Hong Kong.
• Atmosphere: The film captures the paranoia of the digital age effectively. The opening sequence depicting the code traveling through hardware is surprisingly tense.
• Action: When the action hits (particularly the final act in Indonesia), it is brutal and visceral, typical of Mann’s style.

The Bad:

• The "Hollywood Hacking": If you are tech-savvy, prepare to suspend your disbelief. The film treats hacking like a physical heist, and seeing Hemsworth furiously typing code that looks like a video game is unintentionally funny at times.
• Pacing: The film drags in the middle act, prioritizing slow-burn atmosphere over narrative momentum.
• The Lead: Chris Hemsworth is charismatic, but his character feels like an action hero who just happens to know code, rather than a true hacker.
