8. Installation and Driver Setup for the GX-24

To use CutStudio effectively, the Roland GX-24 driver must be installed before CutStudio. The driver establishes a virtual COM port over USB. Key installation notes:

  • Disable Windows automatic driver signing (for older driver versions).
  • Select “Roland GX-24” in CutStudio’s “Setup” → “Printer/Cutter Selection.”
  • Perform a communication test: CutStudio → “File” → “Cut” → “Test” – moves the cutter head 10 mm.

Phase 4: Sending the Job

Click OK. The GX-24 will:

  1. Move the carriage to measure material width.
  2. Move to the origin.
  3. Begin cutting. The CutStudio status bar will show real-time progress (lines cut vs. remaining).

The Real-World Workflow (That Pros Use)

Here’s the secret: Most GX-24 owners don’t use CutStudio as their main design app. They use it as the final output stage.

  1. Design in Illustrator/Inkscape.
  2. Export as EPS or AI (version 8).
  3. Open in CutStudio “Full” – check paths, assign cut lines by color.
  4. Hit “Cut” – and walk away.

The GX-24 will run all day. I’ve seen these machines in print shops that have cut miles of vinyl daily for 10+ years.

Step 4: The "Roland GX-24" Quirks (And Fixes)

  • Issue: The machine cuts off alignment.
    • Fix: Turn the machine off. Push the pinch rollers all the way to the left and right. Re-calibrate using "Set Base Point" in CutStudio.
  • Issue: CutStudio won't detect my USB.
    • Fix: You must connect via a standard USB-B cable (printer cable). Hubs rarely work. Use a direct port on your PC motherboard.
  • Issue: The blade drags across the vinyl when moving.
    • Fix: Your "Offset" is wrong. For a standard Roland blade holder, set Offset to 0.25 mm in the tool settings.

Step 3: Force, Speed, and Quality (The GX-24 Sweet Spots)

The GX-24 is analog in the best way. In CutStudio’s "Cutting Conditions" menu, use these starting points:

| Material | Force (gf) | Speed (cm/s) | Tool | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Oracal 651 Vinyl | 80 gf | 20 cm/s | 45° Blade | | Twill / Heat Transfer | 110 gf | 15 cm/s | 45° Blade | | Cardstock (heavy) | 130 gf | 10 cm/s | 60° Blade | | Masking Tape | 60 gf | 30 cm/s | 45° Blade |

The "Full" Test: Before cutting a job, always hit the TEST button on the machine itself (or in the software). Cut a small square. If you can weed the inside of the square but not rip the backing, you have the perfect pressure.
