Every single Division I school. All 328 of them. No generic arenas, no missing teams. You could take FIU to the Final Four, run a dynasty with a low-major, or play as the defending champ Florida Gators (Noah, Horford, Brewer).

Unique Team Features That Set It Apart

  1. Authentic Arenas — Dozens of real college arenas were modeled (Cameron Indoor, Allen Fieldhouse, Rupp Arena, Pauley Pavilion). Even smaller schools had unique court designs and student section chants.

  2. Team Prestige & Pipeline States — Each team had a 1–5 star prestige rating that affected recruiting. Texas teams got pipelines in-state; Duke/UNC got national reach. This made building low-major programs a genuine challenge.

  3. Legacy Mode Depth — You could take Chicago State from a 1-star prestige to national champions, or rebuild a fallen power like San Francisco (Bill Russell’s alma mater) back to glory. Every team had unique recruiting hotbeds and academic requirements.

  4. Mascot & Band Authenticity — The Florida State Seminoles did the chop; Duke’s Cameron Crazies jumped; the Stanford band played their irreverent songs. These details made each team feel alive.

Summary Table: Teams by the Numbers

Why the Teams List Matters Today

College Hoops 2K8 remains relevant because:

Full List Memory Aid

While I can’t list all 341 teams here (that would be a separate document), the key takeaway is: If it was a D-I men’s basketball program in 2007, it’s in this game. From Duke to Delaware State, UCLA to UMBC, Kansas to Kennesaw State — College Hoops 2K8 delivered the most complete, obsessive, and loving representation of college basketball’s teams ever put into a video game.

Bottom line: College Hoops 2K8’s teams list wasn’t just a roster — it was a monument. For fans who still play it in 2025 via emulation or on original hardware, scrolling through those 341 logos remains a powerful trip back to a golden age of both college hoops and sports gaming.

The "story" of the College Hoops 2K8 teams list is one of enduring legacy, community-led updates, and a surprisingly deep roster that has kept the game relevant nearly two decades after its release. While it officially launched with nearly every NCAA Division I program of the time, its true longevity lies in how players use those teams for the legendary "Closed Legacy" mode. The Official 2007 Roster

At launch, the game featured over 300 playable Division I teams.

Completeness: Almost every school was included, including then-newcomers like South Carolina-Upstate, Cal State-Bakersfield, and Florida Gulf Coast.

The "UL-Calcutta" Mystery: Due to licensing issues, Centenary College of the Summit League was renamed UL-Calcutta in the game, though it retained its real-life player likenesses.

Classic & All-Time Teams: The game shipped with 90 classic rosters, including 69 re-creations of legendary teams like Michael Jordan’s 1982 Tar Heels, alongside 15 all-time school teams and 6 all-time conference teams. The "Closed Legacy" Starting List

For many, the "story" of the teams list is actually the restricted list found in Closed Legacy Mode. You cannot start at a powerhouse like Duke or Kansas; you must begin at a "scrub" school. Common starting teams include: SWAC/MEAC: Prairie View A&M, Alcorn State, Bethune-Cookman. Air Force Falcons Akron Zips Alabama Crimson Tide

Small Conference Staples: The Citadel (Southern), NJIT (Independent), and South Dakota State (Summit).

Fan Favorites: Players often choose schools like UC Riverside or Texas Southern because their home states make recruiting easier. Modern Evolution & Community Updates College Hoops 2k8 Legacy Mode Tutorial

For fans of collegiate basketball, College Hoops 2K8 remains the "gold standard" of sports simulations, even nearly two decades after its release. While hundreds of teams are included, a few programs stood out with the highest ratings in the base game:

The Powerhouses: Traditional "Blue Bloods" like Duke University, UNC, UCLA, and Kansas featured rosters loaded with future NBA talent.

The Mid-Major Sleepers: Teams like Davidson (led by a young Steph Curry, though unnamed in-game) and Butler were formidable opponents for any player.

The Unlicensed Exception: Due to licensing issues, Centenary College appeared under the pseudonym UL-Calcutta. The 90 Classic Teams

One of 2K8’s most celebrated features is its inclusion of 90 classic teams, allowing players to settle "greatest of all time" debates on the court.

69 Past Greats: These are player-for-player recreations of legendary squads, such as Michael Jordan’s 1982 North Carolina Tar Heels and the high-octane 1990 Loyola Marymount Lions.

The plastic case was dustier than he remembered. Marcus turned it over in his hands, the familiar cracked hinge and the faded 2K Sports logo hitting him with a wave of 2007. College Hoops 2K8. The last great one.

He’d found it at a garage sale for three dollars. The old woman had said it was her son’s, and he’d “left for a real life” years ago. Marcus knew that feeling. He’d left his real life—a gangly, left-handed point guard from Spokane—for spreadsheets and quarterly reports.

He slid the disc into his backwards-compatible PS3, the whir of the drive a time machine. The opening chords of the menu music swelled, and there it was: the Team Selection screen.

He didn’t scroll for a power conference. He didn’t pick North Carolina or UCLA or the Kevin Durant-led Texas Longhorns. No, his thumb moved with muscle memory down the alphabet, past the mid-majors, past the SWAC and the MEAC, until he landed on a name that felt like a ghost.

EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY (Big Sky Conference) – Overall: 72

He whispered the roster aloud, a forgotten prayer.

“Rodney Stuckey. Freshman. 6’5”, Combo Guard.”

In 2007, Stuckey was a myth. A kid from Kent, Washington, who’d been overlooked by every Pac-10 school, who’d chosen the tiny Cheney campus because it was the only one that promised he could play right away. In 2K8, Stuckey was a glitch. A 90-speed, 88-ball-handle, 85-clutch monster hidden in a 72-overall team’s jersey.

Marcus remembered the digital magic. You’d let Stuckey dribble-penetrate against Gonzaga’s Derek Raivio, spin out of a double-team, and hang in the air for a reverse layup that the game’s physics engine had no business allowing. You’d lose 80-60 in real life, but in the virtual world of Legacy Mode, you could drag the Eagles to the Sweet Sixteen on his back alone.

He scrolled right. The rest of the list loaded.

The bench was a collection of auto-generated names that had once felt like brothers: Neal, Dos Santos, Schwab.

Marcus selected the team. The virtual arena loaded—a generic, half-empty gym that was supposed to represent Reese Court. The crowd was a 2D cutout, the cheerleaders pixelated blobs. But then the tip-off happened, and Rodney Stuckey crossed over the opposing Weber State guard.

The joystick vibrated. Stuckey pulled up from the top of the key, just past the NBA line. The shot meter filled. Release.

Swish.

The crowd of 350 virtual fans roared. For a moment, the spreadsheet life vanished. There was no mortgage, no 8 AM meeting, no bad knee that ached in the rain. There was only the College Hoops 2K8 teams list, a roster of nobodies and one soon-to-be Detroit Piston, proving that even the smallest school on the list had one night of glory left in it.

Marcus smiled. He had his real life. But for the next hour, he was taking Eastern Washington to the Final Four.
