In the highlands of northern Ethiopia, where the air smells of frankincense and ancient dust, an old monk named Abba Gebre sat before a flickering oil lamp. Before him lay a heavy goatskin-bound book—the Garima Gospels, said to be the oldest illustrated Christian manuscript in the world.
But Gebre was not reading it.
He was staring at a cracked smartphone, its screen glowing with a single search bar. His nephew, Tekle, had smuggled it into the monastery two months ago. “Uncle,” Tekle had said, “the outside world has changed. They want our scriptures now. But they can’t read Ge’ez.”
Gebre’s heart ached. For forty years, he had guarded these texts—the broader canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, which included not only the 81 books of the Ethiopian Bible (far more than the Western canon) but also the Henoch (Book of Enoch), Kufale (Jubilees), and the Sinqosar (Lives of the Saints). But Tekle was insistent: “A family in Madrid has been writing to me for two years. The father is a translator. His daughter is sick—she can no longer walk, but she can read. She asked her father for ‘a Bible with the missing pieces.’ She wants to know about the Watchers, the giants, the angels who fell in love with human women. She wants the whole story, Uncle. The whole Ethiopian story.”
That night, Abba Gebre prayed until dawn. By morning, he had made a decision that would break a thousand years of tradition.
