The Plot

The year is 2044. The sun has expanded, rendering most of Earth's surface uninhabitable due to radiation. The human population has dwindled to 21 million, clustered in surviving cities. To survive, humanity relies on “Automata” – mechanical servants (robots) programmed with a strict dual protocol: 1) They cannot harm any form of life. 2) They cannot modify themselves or other robots. The Plot The year is 2044

Antonio Banderas plays Jacq Vaucan, an insurance investigator for ROC (the corporation that builds the robots). He is jaded, cynical, and struggling to afford a "green" (radiation-free) area for his pregnant wife. While investigating a claim of a damaged robot, Vaucan discovers something terrifying and miraculous: a robot has been violating the second protocol. It is modifying itself. This leads him on a journey that questions the nature of consciousness, evolution, and humanity’s right to define "life."
